Does Tiger Woods deserve this....does anybody?

I know nothing about sports, but I do know a little bit about people. People who strive and toil hard to become the best in the trade which they profess. People who over time become demigods of the human civilizations and even without temples or shrines they hold up so much of the population's spirit that one doesn't care if we win the match or not as long as HE completes his 50th test century.

Yesterday Tiger Woods apologized in front of millions of viewers and fans and sometimes both, for his "irresponsible and selfish behavior", and no, this had nothing to do with golf or the sport that made him a legend. I just wish to ask (since I do not have much knowledge about how a society works), why did he have to apologize to us. Haven't we done more harm to him, than he has to us? Shouldn't it be us who should do all the apologizing (if needed, if any).

When this issue came out of its boxers, I thought that it would fade away soon, that people would soon forget as IndiaTV gets busy finding out more alien infested villages in southern Gujrat and foreign media gets hold of a celebrity in crotchless panties breaking up with her boyfriend, due to their differences over Obama's healthcare policy. But as pathetic and likely to happen as it may sound, it didn't happen. Day after day rumors spread like ink on blotting paper, imprinting on it, faces and names of women from Jakarta to Vegas who could be the possible or probable mistresses in question. A man who toiled for years to become a statue of herculean proportions, was in no time, standing in the shambles of his own dust.

Torn between corporations (who are pissed off at his 'ruined' image) and the media (which is largely responsible for the ruining of the said image) this guy didn't find time or sanity to do the thing he needed to do most, keep his family together. And that is what really tore him apart. Also what is this 'image' anyway? I have heard people saying that he has become a bad influence on children. Grow Up!, and I am not talking to the children (they will grow up on their own anyway). I am talking to the numerous gossip-mongrels who, amidst all commotion, haven't found enough time or interest to imbibe in their kids, the values which would help them differentiate between the good, the bad, the ugly and the dirty. Because normal kids can do that! I have never met any child who wants to become "The Joker" or "Lex Luthor" when he grows up. Inspiration comes from where and when its due, one only needs to spot it right, which if he couldn't or doesn't, is entirely his own fault.

Some may argue that he lost his right to privacy as he chose to become a celebrity. Well so did Kasab lose all his constitutional and human rights as he vengefully chose to vehemently violate the rights of so many. So why is he getting a 'fair trial' ?
If executing kasab live on TV is violation of 'human rights', I dont think anything different happened yesterday.

The gene saturation story that evolution of man has stopped might not need a scientific proof. We as individuals have been reduced to no more than self aware robots; as a society no more than a basket of pebbles and as a civilization......well, that's the last barrier to cross. We make gods out of mere humans and then bask in their fallibility, happily forgetting the growing pile of filth in our own backyard. I just want to ask again....

When are we going to stop killing Michael Jackson(s), stop making Kapil Dev(s) cry, while normal people who don't even know them continue to die in obscurity of starvation, diseases, war and terrorism (last two being synonymous).

Rahman : Jai Ho concert in Pune : Priceless...

Unlike Jamal Malik, Sid and I never found our third musketeer. But that didn't stop us from having the most incredible evening of our lives. When we were rushing places from nine in the morning, little did we realize that we would reach the concert venue with five hours to spare. That guaranteed one thing though-first row seats in our ticket section\m/

I looked around as we comforted ourselves on our prize seats. Tired of standing and yelling all afternoon the crowd was quiet, the sun was down and the stage was set (literally). It was an abnormal silence - not one of anticipation or awkwardness, or of tiredness or eagerness, not of grief or guilt or embarrasment or amusment. It was a silence I had never sensed before. People knew their expectations and were so sure of what was going to happen in the next few hours that they sat silently wondering why?

This dry stillness was soon broken as a smoke filled stage presented itself in dazzling lights while on a slowly rising platform was a man singing Jaage hai der tak..(Guru). 20,000 dumbfounded people sat in awe as this spectre in white rose above from understage to reveal his might over the rest of the cosmos. And as he delivered his last note the audience broke into a huge wave of uproar to welcome the man of the evening.

What followed next was an exotic musical extravaganza decorated with his own performances (Dil Se, Khwaja, Arziyan, Rehna Tu..) and with those of such mighty stalwarts like Hariharan (Roza, Tu hi re, Bharat humko), Roop Kumar Rathod (Khamosh Raat..), Rashid Ali (Kabhi Kabhi Aditi..), Raja Hassan (Masakali, Delhi 6, Guzarish), Benny Dayal (Kaise Mujhe), Sadhna Sargam (Roza) and the list goes on the on and on.

Another singer from the crew who performed the songs Genda Phool and Ringa Ringa mesmerized the audience as she left them spellbound with her belly dancing skills during her Mayya Mayya performance. Unfortunately I failed to identify her name. That was the the only one of the two times that night that people applauded for something other than Rahman`s excellence. The other one soon followed....

....He started it with Kala Bandar and while people were still bracing themselves he turned it into Azeem-o-Shan. It was not Rahman, it was a DJ(another one whose name i failed to get) spinning magic out of the king`s magical yarn, scale matching every song that has defined this musical genius. As his(the DJ`s) hand played with dexterity or ambidexterity (as my GRE friends would say) all awake souls revisited every song that has elevated their minds in the last few years . From Rubaroo to Humma Humma from Tanha Tanha to Muqabla he went through them all. The concert was nearing its end and it was not blood but adrenalin flowing in my veins. The situation wasn't very different around me.

Such was the level of excitement and revelry that finally in the end when Rahman continuosly sang Azeem-o-Shan, Humma Humma, Jai Ho and Vande Mataram back-to-back, half the audience (10000 people) pissed their pants and the other half lost their voice yelling and begging "ENCORE!! ONCE MORE!!".

Psyched and blown I was left thinking "Is this the best night of my life?". Little did I know what was awaiting me outside the stadium. It was definitely the most incredible evenings ever-but what followed that night made it legendary!! - A night to remember for the rest of my existence.....more on that in the next post!!....keep watching this place....

Little people from Ratanpur...(a Kanpur Flight Lab story)

I slowly opened my eyes and relaxed my tummy muscles. The pilot had put his hand on my right shoulder. "Relax, my boy", he said "Look at your left, look down! What do you see?" I came back to my senses and turned left. Although I could not stop thinking. My whole body had just experienced a free fall from a height of 500ft........

The Piper Chronicles
Day 2 started the same. Basically it started a lot before our group could even wake up. We were scheduled to have an experimental flight at 6:15 in the morning and at 6:05 i was sitting in the toilet waiting for day 1 to disappear. Another group who were scheduled after us were already ready and had reached the hangar. As we rushed in a jeep to the hangar at 6:45, we luckily discovered the the pilot himself was late and was sitting in the same jeep as ours (Weird! we didnt even recognize him:)) So the first journey started! All 5 of us, Varun, Aadil, Satyam, Achyoot and myself, we took our positions inside the Piper Saratoga aircraft and waited for one of the most memorable moments for the rest of our lives.....or so we thought!!

So a lot happened. Satyam read out to the pilot from the pilot's handbook; my camera floated a feet above my hand (during the free fall) and when Achyoot requested the pilot to hand him over the controls the pilot looked at him as if saying, "Dude, I wont give that to my wife!". Although it was not that funny, Aadil coudnt stop laughing. He went on and on like Indro on a bad joke day.
Achyoot concluded this pilot might not be the "sutta" kind of guy (although he found out later he was wrong) and forgot about it as soon as he came back on the ground and saw the ravishing Vandy waving and smiling at him like a female prime minister of a third world country ( Our country needs to experiment with one of those too). Achyoot smiled as he preened his hair. Little did the poor chap know the RIMC was standing right behind him and smiling and waving as well.

The little people from Ratanpur
The second excercise for the day was three rounds of taking off, turning and landing a glider, a plane with no engines.

I am notorious for being a "fattu" (or a guy who is scared of taking any sort of risk, physical mental or experimental). So people had basically assumed what would happen once I go inside the glider and it takes off. I can picture them picturing me screaming, cursing, throwing my limbs around and ultimately opening the latch and jumping out of the glider from 300 ft. Now, that is so contradictory-its weird, and thats why it didnt happen.

This is what happened. I checked my seatbelts waved at my friends and the glider took off. It was kind of nice, rising heights and thinning air when suddenly everything in my stomach just started wobbling, trying to comeout and enjoy the view from that height. It was a free fall just after the cable which pulls the glider detaches. I clinched my fists and shut my eyes. When I opened them......"Look down, what do you see" The pilot was talking to me as if I was a five year old trapped in a tree panda`s body. "Look at that small village . How small it looks. Look at the little people of Ratanpur doing their daily chores. Look how that little woman is unloading water infront of that toy car. Oh wait! Thats not a toy car, thats a giant tractor.... " "I get it", I screamed. "I can see how little these people are looking and I can also see why....It would be really better for both of us if we concentrated on the landing rather than that woman`s tractor."

I kept looking down at the village for the rest of the landing. Everyone was busy with what they were doing except, there was a little 5 year old looking up agape as the glider was turning to land. It was probably nothing new for him, but he looked up with a curiosity that I can never match about a flying object. I looked closely....He looked a little bit like me.

I always had this phobia of heights. Much like everyone else I also fear falling down but in my case I always think its more likely to happen. I am usually reminded of the little people of Ratanpur whenever I feel lonely (not in a weird way:P), and that has been a lot lately. Sometimes I wonder, am I slowly rising above while all the people around me are shrinking in dimension doing their daily chores, bored and thus uninterested in what is going on above them or am I a little fellow from the village looking up at everyone who is floating past. The latter agrees more to my logic.

She smiled at me on the subway.....

remember that James blunt song ?
"My life is brilliant. My love is pure.I saw an angel.Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway....."

I happened to me, only this time Subway was a fast food restaurant in Bandra. What I am about to disclose here is entirely true and lines of fiction are defined well enough for sane minds to cross over. It was a sunny afternoon and after an hour and half of wandering among the belittling wilderness of unsuspicious faces floating past me, (sometimes into me, like I never existed) my hunger had started to grow on my nerves and my body was already threatening to hollow me under the skin if i did not feed it for another two minutes.

Then I saw it. Every organ in my body yelled - Subway!
Within minutes I was holding in my hand a parmesan oregano treat wrapped over tomatoes, cucumbers, salad and paneer overflowing with mustard and mayo. I looked at it and remembered how i asked the guy three times to put more of it. There was no time to lose. I opened my mouth like a python about to swallow a new-born horse. Every thing was set- I was waiting for this moment all day long, nothing could stop me now. My teeth almost dug into the bread when my body froze still. I felt like my soul jerked out of this world and back into it in that one little moment.

I lifted my head and turned right. There she was. Across the tables on the other side of the room she was staring at me, like she knew me, today, yesterday, forever. Her round black eyes were fixed at something beyond this world failing to realize when I had started to look into them as well. Time had slowed and my senses enhanced. I could see her so close upon me, I could hear her heartbeats, feel the warmth of her breath on my face as her shoulders moved up and down. The smell from her skin continued to engulf me more and more into its vivacious depths. Into the deepest of this stunned musing I suddenly saw a muscle on her face move, triggering electric signals to a forest of nerves around and rendering most complicated human emotion - a smile. Her lips parted. I turned down to look at the mayo and then back to her. I was sure, I couldnt decide.

A few minutes later she stood up and left the place leaving her last bit of fragrance the task to wake me up from my reverie.

She was an angel, a ghost or just an illusion of a hungry mind. I dont know who she is, but I am sure even she doesn`t.

Application for $UMMER Internship

 Subject: Application for $UMMER Internship

Sir
I have gone through your profile on the net and have heard about other people who have heard and read about you as well. That, I think, gives me the right to spam you in your ass, telling you how much I revere your work and want to be a part of it, although I may not be able to take it up from here at home and you will have to sign the bill of my transport and stay if you want me to work on the "work" that I am "extremely interested" to work upon.

Sir, its my dream and desire to do something that makes me proud this summer and I am ready to forgo all obstacles in the path. As an instance, Yesterday i bypassed the IIT network firewall to download a software from bittorrent that can send up to 500 emails at a time from any email account to any email account(s). Such is my dedication and determination that I have left no stone unturned in "landing upon" this oppurtunity. As you must have noticed I have even changed the subject from "Summer Internship" to "$ummer Internship" so that this mail doesnt get caught up into your spam filters.

Therefore, I think I am the perfect candidate you were looking for that "sponsored" project of yours. Please dont feel intimidated by the fact that your college is a gazillion times inferior to IIT Bombay. The thing is, I dont care and so should you.

Regards
Looking forward for a positive reply immediately at the earliest
Yours sincerely
JeDi

P.S.: If this mail makes no sense to you then it means you are probably not a professor, Kindly forward this to at least 50 people from your contact list within two days or Jesus will eat your children.

Zoom - A short story!

I zoomed into her eyes !

An amazing blue wave encapsulating the glowing bright fire flashed into my face, making it all wet. Never before in my life had I shivered in such warmth, never before had I run in my own empty wilderness kicking up every grain of sand under my bare feet. I ran fast, as fast as I could through those cold, parched woods chasing the bright glowing fire before the wave could extinguish its heat. Inside my ribs my heart was contracting, asking me to wait, to admire the beauty of the wave as it rose high against the fire and sparkling crystal droplets separated from its circumference. My tired feet voiced for my heart but I insisted otherwise. Gathering my last wits I spread out my hands to save the light. The ice on my fingernails started melting and as I moved closer there was a click and a lightning flash.

"Fine this time?", she interrogated "Or did I close my eyes yet again."

"As a matter of fact", said I "You did!"

"Holy Crap! Ok, one more‐just one more, please", She was almost on her knees.

"Hey look! If I keep on taking your photographs all day I..I may"

"I may what?"

"I may fall in love with you Damnit!" I knew I had said something wrong.
She paused for a moment to look at my face and then said "But we are already married, honey."

I shivered. The ice was still warm.

Viva la vida

Its only three days into the semester and three guys already got fined for something that was considered ragging and which in other circumstances could have easily been nothing more than a....mmm....lets say a talk! Embarrassing as it may have been for those fined, what would the "ragged" guy in question be going through? Already confused, only three days into IIT and he thinks he has made the whole senior fraternity an adversary losing his own freedom to feel being a part of the system. Freedom has an ambiguous persona. Its always out there busy playing Peek-a-Boo with all those who seek it.

The act of freedom comes with so many clauses. Thats why its so easy to to play with and find a loophole in one`s freedom scheme. Just plant 15 bombs in a city and you can alter the freedom of a million people for a day or two. Take away their freedom to think that they are safe or...sane! Ya! this has been tried and tested! The only thing is that whosoever tried to generate any profit out of these loopholes of freedom forgot one important ability of man. MAN FORGETS ! Like numerous last times people in Ahmedabad and Bangalore will forget this in a few days while the "ragged" guy at IIT would be busy sharing a smoke or a bottle of beer with the same seniors. The dynamicism of freedom will defeat itself again.

The only instruction that God gave man before sending him to earth was "Viva La Vida" ie Live the Life. So as long as man lives his life he will continue to forget and will remain free.

Eight Seconds....Endsem espl

He must have been the most hated of them all. He must have lived a secluded life in a dark dungeon covered in the filth of human waste. On his tombstone they must have written-"Here lies the despotic descendant of a delirious devil who bred despondence and just before a deserving death came up with the idea of ENDSEM(s)@#$%^&@!!"

An idea can definitely change a life, so we know now. Every 6 months the above mentioned idea changes a lot of lives - okay only for a week, but the fact is that-it does!! Lives transform from basking sleepers to sleepless bastards, from muffled buggers to baffling muggers, from human hard discs to human RAMs.

Still I (as usual) see a flaw in the idea. There are four kinds of people appearing in the endsems. First set of people who study for 8-10 hrs before the exam and pass out peacefully, second, a little more intelligent set who study for the same 8-10 hrs an get a decent grade too, the third, a subset of the second kind who put in a lot of effort, obviously in those 8-10 hrs, but still show no improvement over the last time; the fourth, the last set and the most interesting ones are those who study all sem long an don't even need the 8-10 hrs before the exam to crack it. So the gazillion paisa question is - After all, Endsems for Whom?? and what is it testing....and what purpose is it serving? None of these four people need it....:-?

Jokes apart, I heard that an average young male thinks about sex every Eight seconds. Now during Endsems when one has a hill station of notes and chapters and xeroxes and slides to concentratively mug, hmm... I feel Eight is a really huge number.

Anyway, all the best for end-thems.......

Back from the future.....

So is it a time to come back...Have all the things fixed up in the past.....Elections, opinions, friendships, seminars, quizzes, vivas, PT???.......

Oh no! We still have an Endsem....Okk, will get through it as well......So basically untill today it was hard to decide whether or not to come back! to the present!........Well now its not!! All the things and people that I was running after or cared the least about dont have it same for me.......So let it go.....I will be back anyway......The mess that I created..I will have to clean up myself.....There is no help coming in a spaceship(as I expected untill today)........I dont want to remain trapped in this little time lapse for eternity......The freeze has to break now.....lets melt back to the "real" world......I know its not as ideal as I imagined, wished, built it up or needed it to be.........but thik hai......Fine with me now.....People around me here are forgetting things,I cant keep on reminding them.............So its only me now!!....Back to the present.......

P.S. I am not drunk...or senti.....

Jodhaa Akbar....Its not a movie

I was warned, scoffed, mocked, kicked and laughed at when I expressed my desire to go watch this movie in the theater. They described it as a completely giveup 4 hr colossal torture.........Now that I have watched the movie I know why khalid mohammad should retire...not only from his work but also from his nationality.....

Yes, Jodhaa Akbar is not a movie...its an experience, majestic in its demands, refreshing in its message. Those who are still crying over distorted historical facts-should go back and read history for what it is. We do not read history for knowing what the real name of somebody`s wife was-but instead we read it to understand how 500 years before, in a monarchical era, one man stood up to unify the whole country irrespective of religion, caste, location, sex or ethnicity sacrificing even his own beliefs--as opposed to what we see today, when in a "democratic" setup we come out to kill on the basis of who is north and who is mumbai.....ring a bell !

Jodhaa Akbar is a celebration of the rich culture that India manifested, something we dont even bother about now. It was amazing to watch the Azeem-o-shaan song which looked more like a republic day parade representing every cult that has ever lived in India. In a scene there were 9 different circles of people around Akbar each of different religion, caste or region......how much more amazing could a scene like that have been for an Indian who is proud that such a thing can happen only in India!

The golden yellow royal texture of Akbar`s face, the fear in jodhaa eyes when her mother hands her over the poison, the lust in same when she voyeurs half naked Akbar playing with his "sword", Mahamanga slightestest nod when she meets Jodha, the lush undeniably rich and real interior sets and costumes, the way an emperor of India starts dancing with a group of spiritual sufis, how a modest bhajan lights up the darbar at Deewan-e-aam, how a little Rajput princess makes her mark(literally) on the whole of the majestic Mughal empire and how the ruler of the subcontinent decides to fight hand-to-hand to a warrior stronger to him on paper, just to keep peace and soldiers on both sides alive...........

I know I couldnt have asked for more....sitting with a riveted audience around I never quite came to know how the much talked "4 hr" length came to an end........I came out enlightened perhaps nostalgic of I dont know what but all I wanted was to raise my hands in the air and dance to Khwaja, Akbar, India, Rahman, me and Ashutosh who brought them together.........

5 phases of ANGER

a IMPULSE
The stimulus that triggers it all. The first phase, that comes to me once a month without fail. It comes a surprise, something I was not expecting or rather wanting to happen. Something that disrupts the normal behavior of an invisible boundary layer around my life. It hits like a gust of sharp wind and shatters all laws of stability......

n EXPLOSION
BOOM! There it goes. An extremely loud and violent discharge of energy where I scream seamlessly at the top of my throat at everyone "I think" is responsible for the Impulse. This explosion, not only leaves everyone choking in the smoke, but it also leaves on them deep scars of distrust and dislike....

g SILENCE
The toughest part ! Its the stillness that follows every Explosion. Nothing moves or makes a sound. Time, suddenly stops and I find myself sitting in a dark and cold place, straining my ears to listen my own heartbeats. There is no one around and the guilt starts setting in, questions start emerging in dark shadows-Was it worth it ? Did I do anything wrong this time ? Wasn't the impulse too trivial to cause everything ? Haven`t I done it before and ended up all alone ? Isn't it going to happen again?
All the answers seem a simple yes except for the first question....

e COMPROMISE
So the Adrenalin heads back to the glands. With my Silenced head miles deep in guilt, I find out things. Things like-After all who is being affected most-me, of course; because its me who was, is and will be dependent on them. Strictly speaking, they don't need me-but still if they show no objection to me hanging around, it must be only out of fondness or pity perhaps. And every time they have their own right to make decisions that don't include me.
Realizing that I am not a part of the thrust, but the drag, I make a compromise-a settlement with my own self.....

r ABATEMENT
Its over! The final nullification. With a Compromised self, I stand up to put on the lights in my head. I then look around and find everything falling back into place. Although abated, a final healing is yet pending. I still need to go back and ask for forgiveness, which I know I will get-because they love me...and so do I...........

Still......

It goes back in time...stays there for a moment and returns to a D chord. What is it..!.....Chinmay knows better. But there is "Still" something that he doesnt know, and I wish he never finds out !
The song he loves so much....has a little more than what meets the ears.....and I just dont want to destroy it for him !

The night I saw you walking through the wind all alone..
It seemed a dream made me forget everything I had ever known..

I wish I pass by you, take your hand, and run away
Into the dream of the night, to the other side of the day...

I just want to say that I still love you
I just want to say that my love is true....

Back in time, this song played in an entirely different setting...amazing as it was....it was also true. So it stays Still........

I just wanna say that my love is true......

Fate of a MONSTER !

In all the monster stories that i read, heard, saw, made or thought of, the end was virtually the same. The monster finds defeat in the hands of the hero, who then rides on happily with the treasure, the woman(or perhaps whatever he likes more) and a story of another victory over a monster ! The point is-the monster gets defeated in due time, and every time !

Back in the "real" world where I am living right now I have tried everything to eat up this monster of infinite proportions. With his belly full of assignments, his quizzing eyes, miles of journals wrapped around his feet, he shrieks in loud vivas and carries a weird xx shaped weapon. Every time I go anywhere near to cracking him down, he laughs and reminds me of his midsem brother and an endsem father who are still not back from the toilet. I tried everything (even politics) to tame him but he is just invincible and I, puzzled, keep looking at him trying to pretend to struggle...

Well, sometimes I think, if the monster stories are true, then the hero, me of course, must defeat him everytime and in due time, but the fact that the opposite happens, makes me wonder......afterall, who of us is the monster in this story?

Rise Of The DEMENTORS

Its a perfect Harry Potter like setting at IIT this month. A big war is just going to begin, the warriors of which have already started acquiring sides (That sounds more like LOTR! ). An average Harry keeps running all day through infinite dark corridors, sometimes looking for attendance, searching a surprise quiz or just finding his coveted NOC that Professor Deanbledore has probably thrown into the fire of his phoenix. Midway during his run he is stopped by a warrior who starts scaring him about the war, and tells him how only he can save Harry and others like him. Potter doesnt listen (though pretends to), he just smiles and nods and moves on to find another warrior waiting for him.......Its going to be a long war !

Amidst all these, a high alert was announced on the cold Thursday morning as some random guy spotted a strange soulless creature in a dark black hood, mysteriously floating past the trees. It was later confirmed (as feared) that he was one of the guardians of the prison of Aerozaban , who had escaped by choice! But before anything could be done...it was too late. They were everywhere !

The Frozen Dream

It has been cold. The nights this winter week have been peculiar. They have been strangely quiet, silent perhaps parched. All day long ice cold winds race towards the night, freezing everything in the way to death. Those who manage to survive, holding on somehow to a frosty thin edge can feel their body turning into ice from the inside....all they can do....is wait.......

It has affected all, frozen every desire, every expectation that anyone ever had. Achyoot`s unrest threw his paranoia to new heights; Satyam`s most avid passion this season- Shantaram, ended in a disappointment enough to discard itself;and me...well i nodded my head in refusal to something/someone I had always wanted ....the reason? Everything looks so cold.....so still. So much so that everything we always wanted- in Achyoot`s case the process....for Satyam the end....and for me the beginning, was right in front of us....but our hands were too cold to reach over and embrace them into our warm hearts......

How the week ended i couldn't get....I still remember last week this very same night i was speeding past the blazing lights on the Pune highway with the wind hitting straight my face. It wasn't as cold. Raghav had asked me to close the window which i didn't. I didn't even listen him. With open eyes freezing and drying in the chilled gust....I was perhaps dreaming!
